What Is Wisdom Tooth Removal?
Wisdom tooth removal is a common dental procedure to extract the third molars, typically located at the back of the mouth. These teeth often cause problems due to lack of space, infection, or impaction, leading to pain and discomfort. The procedure is performed by our board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons Dr. R. David Roden Jr. and Dr. Rocklin Alling. Wisdom tooth removal is usually recommended when these teeth pose a risk to the surrounding teeth, cause crowding, or are impacted and unable to erupt properly. How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom tooth removal is a surgical procedure typically performed under local anesthesia, though sedation options such as nitrous oxide or IV sedation may be used depending on the patient's comfort level. During the procedure, one of our oral surgeons will make an incision in the gum tissue to access the wisdom tooth. If the tooth is impacted, it may be broken into smaller pieces to make removal easier. After the tooth is extracted, the gum is sutured, and a gauze pad is placed to help control bleeding. The procedure generally takes around 30 – 60 minutes, and patients can expect some swelling and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed medications.
What Are the Benefits of Wisdom Tooth Removal?

- Preventing overcrowding and alignment issues with other teeth
- Reducing the risk of infection caused by impacted teeth
- Easing discomfort or pain from partially erupted teeth
- Preventing damage to surrounding teeth and gums
- Avoiding the development of cysts or tumors related to impacted wisdom teeth
