Dr. Rocklin (Rocky) Alling was born into the world of oral surgery, with his father being a renowned oral surgeon stationed in West Germany, where Dr. Alling was born. Traveling around the United States as a military family, Dr. Alling eventually pursued dentistry at Indiana University and the Indiana School of Dentistry. Despite briefly considering law school, his early experiences shadowing his father on trauma calls and unique adventures treating prisoners on Alcatraz island solidified his passion for oral surgery. Dr. Alling firmly believes that his career is not work but a fulfilling hobby, allowing him to serve his patients with dedication and joy.
After practicing oral surgery in the United States Army and being stationed in Germany, Dr. Alling joined his father in private practice, where he authored multiple articles for professional journals and co-edited a textbook on impacted teeth. Recently, Dr. Alling merged his practice with Dr. R. David Roden Jr., sharing a commitment to providing quality patient care. Dr. Alling received his dental education from the Indiana School of Dentistry. After completing a VA general practice residency in Birmingham, he pursued further training at the University of Louisville in the oral and maxillofacial residency program. Subsequently, Dr. Alling volunteered to serve in the US Army and was stationed in Landstuhl, West Germany, in close proximity to the hospital where he was born.
Dr. Alling is certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, demonstrating his expertise in the field. He has played a prominent role in both the Birmingham District Dental Society and the Alabama State Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, showcasing his leadership qualities. Additionally, he has served as a consultant for the US Army Dental Corps, further highlighting his experience and knowledge in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Dr. Alling and his wife Pam have been happily married for over 44 years. They are blessed with three sons, three lovely daughters-in-law, and eight wonderful grandchildren. The Allings are dedicated members of their church and are committed to serving in a prison ministry. When not traveling, Dr. Alling enjoys painting and working on improving his skills as an artist. He humorously refers to his oral surgery practice as a way to fund his passion for painting!
